Safee Sali has voiced his support and advice for Malaysia’s U23 squad led by head coach Nafuzi Zain, as the team prepares for a crucial campaign at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand this December.
Drawn into Group B alongside Vietnam and Laos, Malaysia faces a tough path to the semifinals — a stage that will only feature the winners of each group and one best second-placed team. Safee, who once led the senior national team through several fierce regional battles, believes the young Harimau Muda must learn from history, especially when facing traditional rivals Vietnam, a team long associated with physical and high-tempo encounters.
Speaking on Nadi Weekend, Safee emphasized that discipline and composure will be key when Malaysia meets Vietnam — a fixture often defined by intensity, aggression, and provocation.
“Matches against Vietnam are always high in intensity. Players must stay responsible and think of the team in every action,” Safee said.
“Perhaps the lessons from past experiences can guide them. Focus on the team and the game for the full 90 minutes. Winning is important, but players must be smarter in how they respond and act.”
The former Johor Darul Ta’zim and Selangor forward also stressed the importance of confidence and unity, highlighting that trusting the team’s tactical approach will be vital for success.
“Players need to trust the playing system and stay united to achieve victory,” he added.
The SEA Games marks Nafuzi Zain’s third major test as U-23 head coach following disappointments in the AFF Cup and the AFC U-23 Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers. For Safee, the tournament represents a crucial opportunity for Malaysia to rebuild pride at the youth level.
He urged Liga Super Malaysia clubs to release their best young players despite the SEA Games not being part of the official FIFA calendar.
“The U-23 squad must be prioritized for the SEA Games,” Safee said firmly.
“This is a matter of national pride, and I hope the best young talents are released for the competition.”
Malaysia last celebrated SEA Games football gold in 2011, under the leadership of captain Baddrol Bakhtiar — a memory still vivid among fans. Safee believes the time has come for the next generation to create their own legacy.
“It has been a long time since our U-23 team lifted a championship trophy,” Safee reflected.
“This is an important mission for Coach Nafuzi. I believe he wants to make history, and I hope this team can bring pride back to Malaysian football.”
