Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) head coach Xisco Muñoz has called for his players to demonstrate full concentration and strong character when they face Chengdu Rongcheng in their AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26 (East Zone) League Stage Matchday 3 fixture.
Speaking at the official pre-match press conference, the Spanish tactician stressed the importance of preparation, mental strength, and adaptability ahead of what he described as a “tough game” against one of China’s rising football powers
“First of all, tomorrow is surely a tough game — like all games when we play in the Champions League,” said Xisco.
“It’s important that we focus on how we start the match. We’ve already checked the pitch, and although it’s not in perfect condition, we have to adapt to it. We need to stay careful in every situation, focus in both areas, and be aware because Chengdu have good quality players in the final third. It’s crucial that we show personality and give our best.”
The JDT head coach, who has guided the Southern Tigers to a positive start domestically and regionally, expects an intense atmosphere at the Phoenix Hill Football Stadium.
“We know how passionate the fans are here. The stadium will be full, and the home supporters will try to push their team from the very first minute,” he continued. “That’s why we must prepare ourselves mentally for the opening moments and be ready to handle the pressure. These are the kinds of matches that make us better — this is football, and these are the games we want to play.”
Xisco also took a moment to express his appreciation for the hospitality shown by the hosts since JDT’s arrival in Chengdu.
“This is our first time playing against Chengdu in the Champions League Elite. From the airport to the hotel and then to the stadium, the people have been very welcoming,” he said.
“The city is beautiful, and the people make us feel comfortable — they give everything to make us feel at home. We’re happy to be here, and we’re looking forward to a great game tomorrow.”
For Muñoz, the fixture represents more than just another group stage match — it’s a chance for his side to test themselves against a new opponent in a challenging environment.
“As professionals, it’s always special to play in these types of games and in these kinds of stadiums,” he said. “Even though the pitch isn’t 100% in perfect condition, it’s not an excuse — we’re here to compete and show our quality.”
