Unionistas de Salamanca CF have officially confirmed the termination of midfielder Gabriel Palmero’s loan from CD Tenerife following FIFA’s decision to uphold the one-year suspension imposed on the player.
In a statement released Friday evening, the club announced that the agreement with CD Tenerife had been mutually concluded and that the decision did not involve any financial penalties for the club.
“Unionistas de Salamanca Football Club have reached an agreement with Club Deportivo Tenerife to terminate the loan of player Gabriel Palmero, following notification received from FIFA on September 25 and the rejection of the player’s appeal on November 3,” the club said in an official statement.
“The agreement has not entailed any financial cost for the club. Unionistas de Salamanca would like to thank the player for his dedication during his time in Salamanca.”
The 23-year-old Argentine midfielder now returns to CD Tenerife, but his immediate future remains uncertain as FIFA’s decision to uphold his 12-month ban effectively sidelines him from all competitive football until late 2026.
The sanction against Palmero stems from a case involving seven players and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), who were accused of document falsification related to eligibility records. On November 3, FIFA rejected FAM’s appeal and reaffirmed the bans and financial penalties issued earlier this year.
Under the ruling, the seven players — Rodrigo Holgado, Facundo Garcés, Jon Irazabal, João Figueiredo, Héctor Hevel, Imanol Machuca, and Gabriel Palmero — were each suspended for 12 months and fined 2,000 Swiss francs, while FAM was fined 350,000 Swiss francs (RM1.8 million).
Following the ruling, FAM expressed its surprise at FIFA’s decision and confirmed it has requested a written justification (motivated decision) from FIFA. The Malaysian governing body stated it would consult its legal team before submitting an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Palmero, who joined Unionistas in July, made several appearances early in the season and had been viewed as a promising addition to the squad. However, the FIFA suspension has now brought his campaign — and his loan spell — to an abrupt halt.
