Sabah head coach, Datuk Ong Kim Swee, has announced his departure after nearly three seasons in this position.
The highly respected former Harimau Muda coach will step down after match against PT Athletic in Unifi Piala Malaysia 2024/25 this Saturday, his final assignment before his contract expires in November 2024.
Despite the Sabah Football Association (SAFA) expressing interest in extending his contract during a recent special meeting, Ong Kim Swee opted not to renew his tenure. Reflecting on his time with the club, he expressed profound gratitude and pride in leading Sabah.
“36 months with Sabah is not a short period of time, and this journey is extraordinary. I am very grateful to be given the opportunity to lead a football club as great as this,” Ong wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Ong Kim Swee joined Sabah in 2021 and has since overseen a significant transformation in the team’s playing style and competitive stature. Under his leadership, Sabah emerged as strong contenders in the domestic league, consistently challenging Malaysia’s football powerhouses.
Ong brought his vast experience, having managed Malaysia’s Harimau Muda project, which nurtured young national talents, and later the senior national team. His tactical acumen and emphasis on discipline left a lasting impact on Sabah’s players and fans.
