Aron Canet (Fantic Racing) has just produced the most thrilling and defining performance of his Moto2 career.
Against all odds, the Spaniard stormed from 14th place on the opening lap to a dominant victory in Qatar, catapulting himself to the top of the Moto2 World Championship standings in spectacular fashion.
Behind him, Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Manuel Gonzalez (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP) completed the podium, while Championship leader Jake Dixon (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) suffered a devastating crash that flipped the title fight on its head.
What began as a disaster quickly became a masterpiece. A massive wheelie off the line saw Canet drop from P3 to P14 before the first lap was even complete. But the fire inside the Spaniard was burning bright. Lap after lap, corner after corner, Canet carved his way back into contention with clinical overtakes and unmatched pace.
By Lap 7, the #44 had climbed to P5. And with eight laps to go, he struck again — moving into P2. When race leader Öncü made a small error, Canet seized the opportunity and took control of the race, never looking back.
While Canet soared, chaos struck behind. Championship leader Jake Dixon was pushing hard to stay in the fight when disaster hit. A crash at Turn 13 ended his night and opened the door wide for Canet, who pounced on the opportunity to claim maximum points and the title lead heading into Jerez.
Canet entered the final lap 1.1 seconds ahead of Öncü, who was defending second place from a relentless Gonzalez. The top three held their ground in the closing moments, with Canet taking the checkered flag to win his first race of the season in emphatic style.
Öncü celebrated his first podium of 2025, and Gonzalez brought home a well-earned third, keeping himself in the hunt for the Championship.
Rookie sensation Daniel Holgado (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) impressed again, finishing just 2.7s off the podium in P4. Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team) edged out Barry Baltus in the duel for fifth, while Celestino Vietti was the top Boscoscuro rider in P7.
The top 10 was rounded out by Marcos Ramirez, Albert Arenas, and Filip Salač, all delivering solid points in a chaotic and high-stakes race.
With his victory, Aron Canet takes the lead in the Moto2 World Championship, setting the stage for a fierce battle heading into the European leg of the season.
“This is the most emotional and important win of my life,” Canet said post-race. “We never gave up. We believed. And today, we made it happen.”
