Sabah FC (MAS) bid farewell to the AFC Cup Zonal Semi-Finals after a 3-0 defeat against Macarthur FC (AUS). Reflecting on the match, Sabah FC’s head coach, Ong Kim Swee, acknowledged the team’s struggle with match fitness, noting, “Conceding just before halftime and early in the second half indicated a disruption in our rhythm. Nonetheless, I commend our players for their resilience despite the formidable challenge.”
Throughout the game, Macarthur FC dominated possession, showcasing their adeptness in converting opportunities into goals, despite Sabah FC’s efforts to maintain control.
“We entered this match with utmost determination. Our execution was impeccable initially, until lapses in concentration crept in. Fatigue became a factor, leading to critical errors. In contrast, Macarthur boasts players capable of altering the course of the game at any moment. Although we had opportunities, our inability to convert them highlighted our struggles following conceding.”
Ong pointed out that as fatigue sets in, the players’ concentration wanes, leaving them vulnerable to punishment from Macarthur. Despite fatigue and a lack of concentration potentially being key factors in defeat, the Sabah’s Head Coach maintained his optimism, stating that the match would serve as a valuable learning experience for his team.
“Although we suffered defeat here, it was a beneficial learning experience for the boys. We are looking forward to the new season of the league in Malaysia and competing in the AFF Championship Club. What I hope for is not just learning, but also implementing intense measures, especially in Asia.”
The head coach also emphasized the importance of club management’s support in terms of operations if Sabah aims to compete at a high level.
