Catalan Grand Prix 2026 delivered one of the most dramatic Sprint races of the modern MotoGP era on Saturday as Alex Marquez edged out Pedro Acosta by a breathtaking margin of just 0.041 seconds in a last-lap thriller at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The sensational duel between the BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP rider and the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star produced the closest Tissot Sprint finish in MotoGP history, leaving fans on the edge of their seats until the final metres of the race.

While Marquez celebrated a memorable Sprint victory on home soil, the afternoon ended in disappointment for Jorge Martin after the Aprilia Racing rider crashed out of contention early in the race.

Italian rider Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the podium in third place for Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, finishing less than half a second behind the race winner in an incredibly tight contest.

The race exploded into life immediately after lights out as Acosta and Alex Marquez battled aggressively for the holeshot into Turn 1. Acosta narrowly held the advantage, using every inch of the circuit to keep Marquez behind him.

However, chaos erupted further down the field when Brad Binder and Joan Mir crashed following contact at the opening corner. Both riders were eliminated instantly, although race stewards later deemed the incident a racing incident.

At the front, Acosta initially controlled the pace while Marquez stayed glued to the KTM rider’s rear wheel. Frenchman Johann Zarco also impressed with a rapid start before settling into the leading group.

The biggest shock of the race came on Lap 3 when Martin crashed at Turn 10 while fighting inside the top five. The reigning French GP winner escaped injury, but the fall marked his fourth crash of the weekend and dealt a major blow to his title momentum.

With Martin out, the battle for Sprint victory intensified dramatically.

Alex Marquez eventually seized the lead after launching a decisive move into Turn 1, while Raul Fernandez briefly emerged as a surprise podium contender after moving into second place aboard the Trackhouse Aprilia machine.

Acosta, however, refused to back down.

The young Spaniard responded aggressively in the closing laps, reclaiming second position before launching a relentless pursuit of Marquez in the final stages. Behind them, Di Giannantonio also entered the fight, setting up a thrilling three-rider showdown for victory.

Heading onto the final lap, less than half a second separated the leading trio.

Acosta shadowed Marquez throughout the final sector and looked poised for a decisive attack, but the Gresini rider defended brilliantly under immense pressure. Despite Acosta’s final-corner challenge, Marquez held on by the narrowest of margins to secure a famous Sprint victory in front of his home fans.

The victory further strengthens Alex Marquez’s growing confidence in the 2026 campaign, while Acosta once again proved why he remains one of the most exciting talents in MotoGP.

Di Giannantonio’s third-place finish highlighted the competitiveness of the VR46 Ducati package, while Fernandez narrowly missed out on a podium after fading late in the race.

Further behind, Francesco Bagnaia recovered strongly from a disappointing qualifying session to finish sixth, while Ai Ogura produced another eye-catching comeback ride from 18th on the grid to eighth place.

Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi endured a difficult afternoon and could only manage minor points, although the Italian still extended his championship advantage over teammate Martin by a single point heading into Sunday’s main Grand Prix showdown in Barcelona.
