Malaysia’s premier women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan–M. Thinaah suffered a narrow defeat in their final Group A match at the BWF World Tour Finals 2025, going down 1-2 (15-21, 21-16, 19-21) to Japan’s experienced duo Yuki Fukushima–Mayu Matsumoto earlier today.
Despite the setback, the loss did not derail Pearly–Thinaah’s campaign, as the world-class Malaysian pair finished top of Group A courtesy of a superior points difference, securing a more favourable path into the knockout stage.
The high-intensity encounter showcased the fine margins at the elite level, with both pairs trading momentum across three tightly contested games. Fukushima–Matsumoto drew on their vast experience to edge the decider, but Pearly–Thinaah’s resilience across the group stage proved decisive in the overall standings.
Crucially, topping Group A allows the Malaysian pair to avoid a blockbuster semifinal clash against China’s Liu Shengshu–Tan Ning, the champions of Group B and one of the tournament favourites on home soil.
Instead, Pearly–Thinaah are expected to face South Korea’s Baek Ha Na–Lee Soo Hee in the semifinals — a pairing they know well and one that promises a high-speed, tactical battle.
With momentum built from consistent group-stage performances and valuable experience in pressure situations, the Malaysians remain firmly in the hunt for a historic World Tour Finals title.
While the group-stage loss may sting, the bigger picture remains positive. Pearly–Thinaah have shown composure, adaptability and championship mentality — qualities that will be vital as the tournament reaches its decisive phase.
For now, the mission continues in Hangzhou, with Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair just one match away from the final.
