Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei saw their unbeaten run in Group B of the BWF World Tour Finals 2025 come to an end after falling to China’s top seeds Feng Yan Zhe–Huang Dong Ping in straight games earlier today.
Despite the 18-21, 24-26 defeat in a hard-fought 53-minute encounter, the Malaysian duo had already secured qualification to the semifinals, ensuring the result did not impact their progression.
The clash lived up to expectations, with both pairs trading blows in a fast-paced, high-intensity contest. Chen–Toh, popularly known as “The Little Gangsters,” matched the world number one pair point for point in the opening exchanges, pushing the Chinese duo to dig deep before taking the first game 21-18.
The third-seeded Malaysians raised their level in the second game, tightening their rotations and defensive coverage to lock the score at 12-12 midway through. However, crucial late errors at decisive moments denied them the chance to force a decider, as Feng–Huang held their nerve to close out the match 26-24.
While the defeat ends their group-stage momentum, Chen–Toh’s overall performance across the round-robin phase — highlighted by two earlier victories — underlined their growing maturity on the elite stage.
With a semifinal berth already in hand, the Malaysians will now turn their attention to recovery and tactical adjustments as they prepare for the knockout rounds, where margins will be even finer.
Loss aside, Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei remain very much in contention for honours in Hangzhou. Their ability to challenge the world’s best — even in defeat — sends a clear signal that Malaysia’s mixed doubles hopes at the World Tour Finals are alive and kicking.
