The stark quality gap within Johor Darul Ta’zim’s squad proved decisive as the Southern Tigers powered to a commanding 5–0 victory over Sabah in the FA Cup final at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
Sabah head coach Jean-Paul de Marigny was candid in his post-match assessment, admitting that greater investment is required if the Rhinos are to close the gap on elite sides like JDT.
“Sabah need to continue developing. We have a good group of players with many young talents improving, but in my personal opinion, we need to invest more and bring in higher-quality players to help the team,” said the 61-year-old Frenchman.
De Marigny stressed that any potential reinforcements would depend on the club’s financial commitment, particularly with the January transfer window approaching.
“Every club must be ready for the transfer window. The number and quality of players we need depend on how much the club is willing to invest,” he added.
“This happens everywhere in the world. Look at JDT — they are one of the better football teams because financially they are strong and they are a big football club.”
The defeat dashed Sabah’s hopes of lifting the FA Cup for the first time in 30 years, having last won the title in 1995. However, reaching the final for the first time in 27 years remains a notable achievement, especially considering their inconsistent Super League campaign this season.
Despite the heavy scoreline, De Marigny praised his players’ fighting spirit and believed they showed glimpses of competitiveness after settling into the match.
“We were a bit cautious at the start, but once we got going — especially towards the end of the first half — I felt we managed to cause them some problems,” he said.
