Low Zi Yu and Dania Sofea Zaidi, continued their remarkable run by defeating China’s top seeds, Chen Fan Shu Tian-Liu Jia Yue, to secure a place in the final of the Women’s Doubles event of World Junior Badminton Championships 2024 in Nanchang, China.
The victory further highlighted the promising talent of Zi Yu and Sofea, who are carrying Malaysia’s hopes after already eliminating their compatriots, the sixth-seeded pair of Ong Xin Yee-Carmin Ting, in the quarter-finals. Despite not being among the tournament favorites, the duo fought hard to earn their spot in the final.
Their semi-final clash was no easy feat, as Zi Yu-Sofea were pushed to three sets by the strong Chinese pair. The Malaysians started cautiously in the first set, losing 16-21 as they tried to gauge their opponents’ playing style. However, they regrouped in the second set, displaying more assertive and high-quality play to win 21-16.
In the deciding set, the young Malaysians showed their resilience, sealing the match 21-17 and silencing the home crowd at the Nanchang International Sports Center. What makes this triumph even more impressive is the age and experience gap—Zi Yu, just 14 years old, and Dania, 17, are relatively new partners, having been paired this year. They have already stunned many by winning the gold medal at the Malaysian Games in Sarawak.
With this victory, Zi Yu-Sofea are on the brink of making history, aiming to bring home Malaysia’s first-ever World Junior Championship gold in the girls’ doubles.
