Terengganu FC earned 3 points in the last home match after beating PSM Makassar scoring 1-0 in the Shopee Cup 2024/25 Group Stage, Group A at Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium, Gong Badak.
Coming off a win against Shan United in their previous match, Terengganu returned home to face the Group A leaders, PSM Makassar. The victory strengthens Terengganu’s chances of advancing to the knockout stages, while PSM suffered a rare setback on their journey.
Terengganu head coach Badrul Afzan deployed a formidable attacking trio of Safawi Rasid, Ismaheel Akinade, and Akhyar Rashid, while PSM Makassar were forced to play without their star striker, Nermin Haljeta.
The hosts controlled the game from the start, showcasing fluid short-passing combinations in midfield and utilizing Akhyar and Safawi’s pace to stretch the opposition’s defense. Ismaheel Akinade had two golden opportunities in the first half, but the Nigerian forward’s efforts were either denied by PSM’s goalkeeper, Reza Arya Pratama, or narrowly missed the target.
PSM Makassar, known for their counterattacking prowess, threatened Terengganu’s defense on several occasions but failed to convert their chances. Despite dominating possession, Terengganu went into halftime with the score still locked at 0-0.
The second half began with Terengganu continuing their relentless pressure. Akhyar Rashid nearly opened the scoring in the 54th minute, only to see his powerful strike brilliantly saved by Reza Arya.
The breakthrough finally came in the 64th minute when PSM Makassar conceded a penalty after a handball incident inside the box. Team captain Safawi Rasid calmly stepped up and slotted the ball into the net, giving Terengganu the lead.
PSM Makassar pushed hard for an equalizer, but Terengganu’s defense, led by goalkeeper Rahadiazli, stood firm. The visitors were unable to break through the Turtles’ resolute backline, ensuring Terengganu secured all three points.
The victory sets the stage for a thrilling final round of Group A matches on February 5. Terengganu will travel to face BG Pathum United in Thailand, while PSM Makassar will host Thanh Hoa in Indonesia.
