Malaysia national team is set for a major boost, with seven more overseas-based players expected to strengthen the squad in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers round 3.
This revelation came from Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim(TMJ), Regent of Johor, who commented on Malaysia’s 2-0 victory over Nepal in their Group F opener on March 25.
“The presence of seven more Malaysian-based players abroad will add more quality and help the team,” TMI shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Malaysia has already seen instant dividends from its latest overseas recruits, particularly Hector Hevel and Gabriel Palmero.
• Hector Hevel (Portimonense, Portugal) made his debut in midfield and scored the opening goal in spectacular fashion. The 28-year-old ADO Den Haag academy graduate also provided a crucial assist for La’Vere Corbin Ong’s goal, earning him Player of the Match honors.
• Gabriel Palmero (CD Tenerife B, Spain), a highly rated defender, further strengthens Malaysia’s backline.
Additionally, Jon Irazabal, a towering center-back for Sabah FK, is also being considered as another overseas reinforcement.
Head coach Peter Cklamovski’s tactical revolution was evident against Nepal, with Malaysia displaying high-intensity, structured football. With more overseas players potentially joining, Harimau Malaya’s depth and quality are expected to rise further.
With their opening win placing them second in Group F behind Vietnam, Malaysia now turns its attention to a crucial showdown against ASEAN champions Vietnam on June 10.
