Doha, Qatar – Former Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has officially been named the new head coach of the Qatar national football team, the Qatar Football Association (QFA) confirmed on Thursday.
The 58-year-old Spaniard replaces compatriot Luis Garcia and has signed a contract through 2027, a period that includes Qatar’s defense of their AFC Asian Cup™ title.
“Ready for a new chapter. Welcome Lopetegui. We’re excited to embark on this journey together,” the QFA announced on social media, alongside a video of Lopetegui declaring, “I’m ready.”
Lopetegui, known for his tactical acumen and experience at the highest level, brings a decorated résumé to the role. In addition to leading the Spanish national team and Real Madrid, he most recently managed West Ham United in the English Premier League and guided Sevilla FC to UEFA Europa League glory in 2020.
His appointment signals Qatar’s clear ambition to rebuild and elevate their footballing status following a disappointing campaign in the ongoing AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26, where they have already fallen out of contention for an automatic spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Lopetegui’s task will now be to navigate the treacherous playoff route, which offers two final places at the tournament.
Lopetegui’s debut on the Qatar bench will come on June 5, when the team hosts Islamic Republic of Iran in a pivotal qualifier. Qatar will then travel to face Uzbekistan on June 10 in their final group-stage fixture.
The move to appoint Lopetegui is seen as a strategic investment in long-term success. With Qatar set to host key continental and regional competitions in the coming years, the QFA is banking on Lopetegui’s leadership to restore confidence and develop a team capable of competing on the global stage once again.
“This is a project with vision and purpose,” said a QFA spokesperson. “We believe Julen Lopetegui’s pedigree and passion make him the right man to lead Qatar into its next footballing era.”
Lopetegui’s mandate will not only focus on short-term qualification but also on building a new generation of Qatari talent—one that can carry the nation’s footballing dreams through to the AFC Asian Cup™ 2027 and beyond.
