Zhang Beiwen, the American women’s singles badminton player, withdrew due to health concerns. from the quarter-final match against An Se-Young, the world number one from South Korea. in the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2025.
The highly anticipated match began with An Se-Young showcasing her trademark dominance and precision, taking the first game comfortably with a score of 21-11. However, at the conclusion of the first game, Zhang Beiwen requested to retire from the match, citing illness and discomfort that left her unable to continue competing.
Zhang’s withdrawal marked an abrupt end to what could have been a thrilling showdown, as her aggressive style has often challenged the world’s top players.
With Zhang’s retirement, An Se-Young automatically advanced to the semifinals. The South Korean sensation will now face the winner of the quarterfinal clash between Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia and Ratchanok Inthanon of Thailand.
