The nation’s top mixed doubles pairing, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, delivered an impressive performance to secure their place in the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2025 semi-finals, much to the delight of the home crowd at the Axiata Arena.
Ranked 5th in the world, Tang Jie-Ee Wei showcased their dominance by defeating Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito, the world’s 14th-ranked pair, in straight sets. The Malaysians started strong, leveraging the electrifying support from the fans to establish an 11-6 lead in the first set. Their consistent attacking game and tactical prowess saw them close out the set comfortably at 21-11.
The second set followed a similar script, with Tang Jie and Ee Wei racing to a 12-5 lead. Despite a spirited fightback from the Japanese pair, the Malaysians kept their composure to win 21-18, booking their spot in the semi-finals.
This win extended Tang Jie and Ee Wei’s head-to-head record against Midorikawa and Saito to 3-2 and further reinforced their standing as Malaysia’s leading mixed doubles pair.
Having eliminated the Chinese Taipei duo of Lu Ming-Che and Hung En-Tzu in the earlier rounds, Tang Jie and Ee Wei demonstrated their intent to challenge for the title on home soil.
Adding to the excitement, Malaysia’s second mixed doubles pairing, Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai, also advanced to the semi-finals. The experienced duo overcame China’s Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi with a hard-fought 21-15, 22-20 victory.
Tang Jie and Ee Wei will now face China’s pair Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping who win Chinese Taipei’s Yang Po-Hsuan-Hu Ling Fang in the quarter-final.
