Penang FC divided point in their home after tied with Kuching City scoring 1-1 in the Liga Super Malaysia 2024/25 at Stadium Bandaraya, Pulau Pinang.
Kuching City nearly took an early lead in the fourth minute when Penang midfielder Nik Akif Syahiran inadvertently deflected a cross from Jimmy Raymond into his own net. However, referee Muhammad Shukor Zulkiflee overturned the goal five minutes later after a VAR review confirmed a foul by Amir Amri Salleh in the buildup.
The visitors had another golden opportunity in the 66th minute when Petrus Shitembi was brought down in the box by Richmond Ankrah. But once again, VAR intervened, and Muhammad Shukor rescinded the penalty decision, much to the frustration of Kuching City players and fans.
Kuching City finally found the breakthrough in the 74th minute when star striker Jordan Mintah slotted home despite initial doubts over an offside call. After a lengthy review, VAR ruled in favor of the visitors, allowing the goal to stand and giving Kuching City a 1-0 lead.
The match took an emotional turn in the 82nd minute when Penang substitute Amer Azahar, who had just returned from an ACL injury, collapsed while attempting to chase the ball. He had to be stretchered off and was replaced by Alif Ikmarizal Anuar.
Amazingly, just four minutes after coming on, the U-23 sensation turned hero for Penang, skillfully beating Wan Muhammad Azraie Wan Teh to score the dramatic equalizer, securing a hard-fought point for the hosts.
Both teams had their chances, and VAR played a massive role in the outcome, but in the end, neither side could claim full points.
With this result, Penang FC and Kuching City will now look ahead to their upcoming fixtures as the Liga Super Malaysia battle intensifies.
