Lee Zii Jia’s patience and perseverance finally bore fruit as the national men’s singles ace snapped a painful 10-month winless streak to advance into the second round of the DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2026 on Wednesday.
The Paris Olympic bronze medallist produced a composed and assured display to overcome India’s H.S. Prannoy 21-19, 21-11, ending a frustrating six-tournament drought that stretched back to the Orleans Masters in March last year.
The victory marked a significant psychological breakthrough for the former world No. 2, whose career momentum was heavily disrupted by a series of injuries that kept him sidelined for large parts of last season.
Zii Jia had earlier taken an indefinite break after a first-round exit at the All England, before opting to apply for ranking protection as he focused on recovery. His comeback attempt at the World Championships in August was short-lived, followed by further opening-round exits at the Hong Kong Open and China Masters in September.
After stepping away once again, Zii Jia returned to competition in 2026, but early defeats at the Malaysia Open and India Open underlined the challenges he continued to face in rediscovering his best form.
However, his commanding performance against Prannoy in Jakarta may signal a turning point, offering renewed belief as he looks to rebuild confidence and consistency on the World Tour.
With the shackles finally off, all eyes will now be on whether Lee Zii Jia can string together successive wins and reignite his campaign in one of badminton’s most demanding arenas.
