Malaysia’s challenge at the Macau Open 2026 came to an end on Saturday after all five remaining representatives were eliminated in the semi-finals, denying the nation a place in any of the finals at the Macau East Asian Games Dome.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Malaysia produced several encouraging performances throughout the BWF Super 300 tournament, highlighted by breakthrough runs from rising stars across multiple disciplines.
The first Malaysian pair to bow out was professional mixed doubles combination Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing, who were unable to overcome top seeds Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin of China. The experienced Chinese pair secured a 21-11, 24-22 victory to advance to the final.
Malaysia’s hopes in the men’s doubles also came to an end as professional duo Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong were defeated by Indonesia’s fourth-seeded pair Al Faathir Rayhan and Devin Artha Wahyudi. The Indonesians proved too strong, claiming a convincing 21-12, 21-11 victory.
In the women’s doubles, second seeds Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting saw their impressive campaign halted by Thailand Open champions Bao Li Jing and Cao Zi Han of China. The Chinese pair produced a composed performance to win 21-18, 21-13 and book their place in the championship match.
Although defeated, Eogene’s breakthrough performance throughout the week marked another significant milestone in his development and further strengthened his credentials as one of Malaysia’s emerging men’s singles talents.
Malaysia’s final hopes rested on men’s doubles pair Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi, but they too were stopped in the last four after losing to South Korea’s Jin Yong and Lee Jong Min in straight games, 21-11, 21-4.
