Malaysia enjoyed another productive day at the SANDS CHINA LTD. Macau Open 2026 after several shuttlers booked their places in the quarter-finals at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, highlighted by strong performances in the men’s doubles and mixed doubles events.
While a number of national representatives advanced, there were also several all-Malaysian clashes and tough defeats against seeded opponents as the Round of 16 concluded.
Top seeds Azriyn Ayub/Tan Wee Kiong maintained their status as one of the tournament favourites after overcoming compatriots Boon Xin Yuan/Lwi Sheng Hao in straight games, 21-17, 22-20.
The experienced pair now move confidently into the last eight, keeping their title ambitions firmly on track.
Malaysia also celebrated another impressive men’s doubles victory through Chia Wei Jie/Teo Ee Yi, who fought back brilliantly to upset second seeds Hu Ke Yuan/Lin Xiang Yi of China 23-25, 21-16, 21-13 after dropping the opening game.
Meanwhile, Low Hang Yee/Ng Eng Cheong produced another composed display to eliminate Singapore’s eighth seeds Wesley Koh/Junsuke Kubo 21-18, 21-14.
However, seventh seeds Choi Sol Gyu/Goh V Shem saw their campaign come to an end after suffering a narrow three-game defeat to Singapore’s Donovan Wee/Howin Wong, 21-13, 19-21, 19-21.
Malaysia will have two mixed doubles pairs in the quarter-finals.
Hoo Pang Ron/Lai Pei Jing delivered one of their best performances of the tournament by defeating Taiwan’s Cheng Kai Wen/Liu Chiao-Yun comfortably, 21-13, 21-12.
They are joined by second seeds Ong Xin Yee/Carmen Ting, who also progressed after beating Taiwan’s Chou Yun An/Sung Yi-Hsuan 21-13, 21-17.
The challenge ended for Liew Xun/Ho Lo Ee, who came agonisingly close against fourth seeds Zhu Yi Jun/Li Qian of China before losing 21-16, 12-21, 19-21.
Another Malaysian pair, Low Han Chen/Chan Wen Tse, were unable to overcome top seeds Jiang Zhen Bang/Wei Ya Xin, falling 20-22, 16-21.
Malaysia’s men’s singles challenge remains alive through Eogene Ewe, who continued his excellent run with a convincing 21-15, 21-15 victory over compatriot Cheam June Wei.
Huan Kai Hern also booked his place in the quarter-finals after recovering from a first-game deficit to defeat Misha Zilberman 13-21, 21-11, 21-9.
In another comeback victory, Cheam June Wei had earlier defeated Macau’s Pui Pang Fong 14-21, 21-15, 21-11 before eventually bowing out in the all-Malaysian clash against Eogene.
However, several Malaysian singles players exited the tournament. Justin Hoh lost to Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen 9-21, 18-21, while Huan Kai Hern was later eliminated by Wangcharoen 10-21, 9-21. Women’s singles representative Goh Jin Wei was forced to retire while trailing India’s Anmol Kharb 4-12 due to injury, ending her campaign prematurely.
