Malaysia’s mixed doubles campaign at the SANDS CHINA LTD. Macau Open 2026 came to an end in the semi-finals after Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing produced a spirited performance before losing to China’s top-seeded pair Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin at the Macao East Asian Games Dome.
The Malaysian combination pushed the world-class Chinese duo hard, particularly in the second game, but eventually went down 11-21, 22-24 in 40 minutes.
After struggling to contain the pace and attacking precision of the tournament favourites in the opening game, Hoo and Lai responded impressively in the second.
The Malaysians matched the Chinese pair point for point, saving multiple match points and forcing an intense finish before Jiang and Wei finally sealed victory 24-22.
Despite the defeat, the Malaysian pair can take plenty of positives from an encouraging campaign in Macau. Their run to the last four included impressive victories over higher-ranked opponents and demonstrated the growing chemistry between Hoo and Lai as they continue to establish themselves among the country’s leading mixed doubles partnerships.
