Malaysian women’s doubles pair Low Zi Yu and Nor Aqilah Maisarah concluded their encouraging Australian Open 2026 campaign in the quarter-finals after a hard-fought defeat to Indonesia’s experienced combination Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari on Friday at Quaycentre Olympic Boulevard, Sydney.
Competing in the last-eight stage of the BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament, the Malaysian duo showed determination and resilience but were ultimately beaten 21-13, 21-17 by the Indonesian pair, who advanced to the semi-finals in Sydney.
Despite the loss, the quarter-final appearance represents another positive milestone for Low and Nor Aqilah as they continue their development on the international badminton circuit.
Facing one of Indonesia’s most consistent women’s doubles partnerships, Low and Nor Aqilah entered the match knowing they would need to be at their best against a pair that has enjoyed strong form throughout the tournament.
The Malaysians faced early pressure in the opening game as Febriana and Meilysa controlled the tempo through aggressive attacking play and effective net exchanges. While Low and Nor Aqilah fought hard to stay in contention, the Indonesians maintained their momentum to claim the first game 21-13.
Refusing to back down, the Malaysian pair produced a much-improved display in the second game.
Low and Nor Aqilah showed greater confidence in longer rallies and began creating more opportunities against their higher-ranked opponents. Their improved defensive structure and attacking intent allowed them to stay competitive throughout much of the game.
However, the Indonesian duo’s experience proved decisive in the closing stages, as they managed key points more effectively to secure a 21-17 victory and seal the match in straight games.
Although their Australian Open journey ended in the quarter-finals, the tournament highlighted the continued progress of Low Zi Yu and Nor Aqilah Maisarah.
Reaching the last eight of a Super 500 event provided valuable exposure against elite-level competition and demonstrated their ability to compete on bigger stages. The experience gained in Sydney is expected to play an important role in their development as they continue building consistency on the BWF World Tour.
The Malaysian pair showed promising signs throughout the tournament and will take confidence from another deep run against quality opposition.
