Lando Norris hailed his victory in a dramatic Australian Grand Prix as an “amazing way to start the year,” emphasizing that he and McLaren had learned from past mistakes in similar race conditions.
Starting from pole position in damp conditions, Norris led through the early stages as the track gradually dried. However, a sudden downpour caused both Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri to slide onto the grass—Piastri becoming stranded—allowing Max Verstappen to seize the lead as Norris pitted.
While Piastri fell down the order in his recovery attempt, Norris later regained P1 when Verstappen was forced to pit for intermediate tires amid worsening conditions. The final laps proved tense, with Verstappen closing in, but Norris held firm to secure a hard-fought victory.
Reflecting on the race, Norris described the experience as exhilarating yet demanding:
“It was amazing. A tough race, especially with Max behind me. The last two laps were stressful, but an incredible way to start the year. We made mistakes, went through the gravel, and damaged the car, but in tricky conditions like these, it’s about getting it right—and this time, we did.”
Asked how he remained composed throughout the chaotic 57-lap contest—marked by crashes and Safety Car interventions—Norris pointed to lessons learned from previous races:
“We got it wrong a lot last year, like at Silverstone and Canada, but we’ve learned from those mistakes. It’s only Round 1 of 24, but managing the pressure, dealing with Max and Oscar behind me, I was pushing the whole way. To not make a critical mistake that cost me the race—I can take a little credit for that.”
With Verstappen looming large in the closing laps, Norris explained his approach:
“Max was quick. I knew I had good pace, but I made a mistake in Turn 6, and he got within DRS range. DRS here is probably worth a second, which let him stay close and apply pressure. I had to check my mirrors more than I would’ve liked, but I stayed calm, kept it together, and listened to my engineer—that was key.”
The victory puts Norris at the top of the championship standings—marking the first time since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix that someone other than Verstappen has led the title race.
On whether this win boosts his confidence for the season ahead, Norris responded:
“You’d hope so, yes. My weekend was incredible from the start. It’s not easy to put together a performance like this, especially with the pressure from Max and Oscar. They’re hungry, competitive, and want it just as badly.”
Despite the celebratory moment, Norris remains focused on the long road ahead:
“Stressful, but I know what I’m capable of. This is just Round 1—we have to do it again next weekend and keep pushing. It’s a long season, and we need to stay focused.”
With McLaren’s strong start, all eyes are on Norris and whether this breakthrough victory signals a genuine title challenge against the reigning champion, Verstappen.
