Jorge Martin produced a sensational charge from eighth on the grid to storm to victory in the French Grand Prix 2026 Tissot Sprint at Circuit Bugatti, while reigning world champion Marc Marquez suffered a devastating late-race crash that ruled him out of Sunday’s Grand Prix.
In front of a packed Le Mans crowd, the Saturday Sprint delivered high drama from the opening corner to the closing laps, with Martin stealing the spotlight through an extraordinary start aboard the Aprilia Racing machine.
Starting from P8, the Spaniard exploded off the line and carved through the field in breathtaking fashion, sweeping around the outside of multiple riders to snatch the lead by Turn 4.
Within seconds, Martin had transformed his race from midfield contender to clear front-runner.
Polesitter Francesco Bagnaia slotted into the podium positions early on for Ducati Lenovo Team, while championship leader Marco Bezzecchi initially held strong before later dropping behind Bagnaia after a costly mistake.
French hero Fabio Quartararo gave the home fans plenty to cheer about with an aggressive opening phase, but the biggest storyline quickly became the struggles of Marc Marquez.
The reigning champion endured a nightmare opening laps after starting from the front row. Losing positions rapidly, the Ducati star dropped down the order following fierce battles with Pedro Acosta and Joan Mir.
At the front, however, Martin looked untouchable. The 2024 world champion steadily increased his advantage lap after lap, controlling the pace with remarkable confidence and precision. By the closing stages, Martin had opened a comfortable gap over Bagnaia, while Bezzecchi consolidated third place to complete a double Aprilia podium.
Saturday’s explosive Sprint has now set the stage for a dramatic Sunday at Le Mans, with Martin and Aprilia carrying massive momentum while the championship landscape shifts significantly following Marc Marquez’s injury setback.
