Laos U16 national team, kept first 3 points in the opening match after beating Philippines U16 national team scoring 3-0 in the ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship 2024 Gorup Stage, Group A at Manahan Stadium, Solo.
Laos, under the leadership of Kanlaya Sysomvang, began the match with high intensity, seeking an early lead. Despite their aggressive approach, the Philippine defense, organized by Japanese coach Yuki Matsuda, successfully thwarted several early attempts.
Laos finally broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. Midfielder Daophahad Kamkasphou completed a precise cross to put Laos ahead 1-0. This goal came after sustained pressure from Laos and marked a turning point in the match.
Stunned by the goal, the Philippines tried to regroup and find an equalizer, but were unable to create significant chances before the break. The first half ended with Laos leading 1-0.
Laos maintained their aggressive play into the second half. Just four minutes after the restart, Laos doubled their lead through an unfortunate own goal by young Filipino defender Jimm Leowell Fabela, who inadvertently deflected a pass into his own net, making it 2-0.
In the 58th minute, the Philippines nearly scored through a long-range effort by Tobias Paulino, but the Lao goalkeeper made a crucial save to keep his team ahead.
Tensions rose when the referee showed a yellow card to the Philippine coach, Yuki Matsuda, due to his vocal dissatisfaction with several officiating decisions. This incident highlighted the growing frustration within the Philippine team.
In stoppage time, Vongdeuan Souliban added a third goal for Laos in the 90+10 minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory.
Laos’ 3-0 victory over the Philippines gives them a strong start in Group A of the 2024 ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship. The result temporarily places them at the top of the group, pending the outcome of the Indonesia vs. Singapore match. Laos will next face Singapore, while the Philippines must secure a win against hosts Indonesia to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
