Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng, a club from Cambodia made a surprise in the stoppage time after beating Young Elephant FC, a club from Laos scoring 3-2 in the ASEAN Shopee Cup 2024/25 play-off stage 1st leg at Laos National Stadium KM16, Vientiane.
In the first half, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng controlled the ball and attacked hard. In the 19th minute, midfielder Gabriel Silva gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. However, in the 33rd minute, Young Elephants equalized to 1-1 with a penalty awarded to Japanese striker Takumu Nishihra.
Just three minutes later, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng’s goalkeeper Vireak Dara was sent off for a foul outside the box, forcing Am Sovannarat to replace Kouch Dany to defend the 10-man squad against the home side’s 11 players.
In the 37th minute, Uzbekistani player Shokhrukh scored a free kick past the Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng goalkeeper, giving Young Elephants a 2-1 lead before the end of the first half.
In the second half, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng continued to dominate and attack, despite having only 10 players. Their situation improved when the Young Elephants’ goalkeeper was also sent off for a foul outside the box, leveling the playing field to 10 vs. 10.
Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng became more aggressive, particularly after Nhean Sosidan and Min Ratanak were substituted in. The right wing became more lively, leading to two late goals. Cristian scored to equalize at 2-2, and Sosidan netted the winning goal.
Next week’s second leg at the National Stadium in Phnom Penh will see both teams without their first-choice goalkeepers.
