Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has unveiled a series of sweeping changes to elevate Malaysian football, focusing on management improvements, cutting-edge medical facilities, and the appointment of new key coaches to lead the Harimau Malaya and U-23 squads into a brighter future.
As part of its restructured vision, FAM has officially announced the appointments of Peter Cklamovski as the new head coach of the senior national team and Nafuzi Zain as the head coach of the U-23 squad. Both coaches bring extensive experience and proven track records in developing competitive teams, making their appointments pivotal to Malaysia’s football revolution.
Australian tactician Peter Cklamovski, 46, steps in to guide Harimau Malaya with the aim of making them a formidable force on the international stage. Cklamovski has built an impressive résumé over his 15-year career, including significant contributions alongside Ange Postecoglou in leading Australia to the 2015 Asian Cup triumph and the 2019 J1 League title with Yokohama F. Marinos.
As a head coach, Cklamovski has proven his ability to inspire and turn struggling teams around. His stints with Shimizu S-Pulse and Montedio Yamagata in Japan highlighted his tactical acumen, as he successfully rescued the latter from relegation and steered them to the playoffs. Most recently, he made an immediate impact at FC Tokyo by instilling a vibrant football philosophy that reignited the club’s fans.
Cklamovski’s first mission is clear: ensure Harimau Malaya successfully navigates the Group F qualifiers to secure a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, he is tasked with elevating Malaysia’s FIFA ranking to break into the world’s top 100.
To ensure a seamless pipeline of talent for the senior team, FAM has appointed Nafuzi Zain as head coach of the national U-23 team. Known for his ability to nurture young players, Nafuzi has enjoyed a storied coaching career. From leading Kelantan’s youth team to multiple President’s Cup titles to steering Terengganu FC to impressive finishes in the Super League and FA Cup, the 46-year-old has built a reputation as one of Malaysia’s finest coaching talents.
Nafuzi’s immediate challenges include revitalizing the U-23 squad for key tournaments in 2025: the ASEAN U23 Championship, the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers, and the SEA Games in Thailand. His experience in youth development will be crucial in molding the next generation of Malaysian football stars.
FAM’s vision for progress extends beyond the pitch, with plans to overhaul the organization’s management and medical infrastructure. A new Chief Executive Officer will be appointed to streamline operations and ensure the association operates efficiently and professionally.
Key investments in medical technology will support player fitness, recovery, and performance. The medical team will employ state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and treatment methods to reduce injuries and maximize player potential. These changes reflect FAM’s commitment to building a well-rounded and high-performing team at all levels.
The bold reforms signal FAM’s intent to not only improve the current performance of Harimau Malaya but also lay the foundation for sustainable long-term success. With Cklamovski and Nafuzi leading their respective squads and enhanced support systems in place, Malaysian football fans can look forward to an exciting new chapter.
Both coaches will officially assume their roles on 1 January 2025, marking the beginning of a new era as Malaysia gears up for major competitions such as the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers and the SEA Games.
