Malaysian shuttlers experienced a combination of strong victories and narrow heartbreaks as the Round of 32 unfolded at the Sathio Group Australian Badminton Open 2025 (HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500).
The competition, held in Sydney, delivered intense men’s doubles action, with Malaysia featured in six matchups throughout the day.
Lau Yi Sheng–Lim Tze Jian faced a formidable challenge against fifth seeds Fajar Alfian–Muhammad Shohibul Fikri of Indonesia. The Malaysian pair fell in straight sets 15–21, 10–21, unable to break through the Indonesians’ pace and control.
Malaysia’s veteran Goh V Shem, paired with South Korea’s Choi Sol Gyu, delivered a commanding performance to defeat Australia’s Raphael Chris Deloy–Adam Jeffrey 21–8, 21–13. Their blend of experience and aggression sealed a comfortable 2–0 victory.
Third seeds Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun maintained their strong form, beating Taiwan’s Chiang Chien-Wei–Wu Hsuan-Yi in straight sets 23–21, 21–16. The Malaysians showed resilience in a tight first game before pulling away confidently in the second.
Malaysia’s world-class duo and second seeds, Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin, showed their class by dismissing Taiwan’s He Zhi-Wei–Huang Jui-Hsuan 21–10, 21–10. The convincing victory sent a strong message as they continue their quest for the title.
One of the day’s closest battles saw Azriyn Ayub–Tan Wee Kiong narrowly edged out by Denmark’s Christian F. Kjær–Rasmus Kjær. After taking the first game, the Malaysians were forced into a decider, eventually losing 19–21, 21–13, 20–22 in a heartbreaking finish.
Malaysia closed the day with a highlight as Choong Hon Jian–Haikal Nazri delivered one of the biggest upsets, defeating seventh seeds Lee Jhe-Huei–Yang Po-Hsuan (Taiwan) 21–10, 21–13. Their sharp play and attacking consistency earned them a well-deserved spot in the next round.
