Spain underlined their status as one of the FIFA World Cup 2026 favorites with a commanding 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their second Group H match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta.
Spain needed just 10 minutes to break the deadlock after a swift transition from midfield. Mikel Oyarzabal drove down the left flank before delivering a pinpoint cross for Lamine Yamal, who arrived unmarked at the far post to calmly finish and hand Spain an early advantage.
The opening goal completely unsettled Saudi Arabia, allowing Luis de la Fuente’s side to dictate possession and showcase their attacking quality.
With Saudi Arabia struggling to contain Spain’s relentless movement, Oyarzabal quickly turned provider into goalscorer.
The experienced forward struck twice in quick succession in the 21st and 24th minutes, putting Spain firmly in control before the half-hour mark.
Oyarzabal nearly completed a first-half hat-trick in the 35th minute after capitalizing on a poor clearance from goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais, but his clever lob crashed against the crossbar.
Spain continued to dominate possession throughout the remainder of the opening half, with Oyarzabal, Yamal and Marc Cucurella constantly stretching the Saudi defence.
The second half resumed in much the same fashion, with Spain extending their lead within five minutes of the restart.
A corner from the left found Marc Cucurella at the far post. Although Alowais initially produced a save, the rebound ricocheted off a Saudi defender and into the net for an unfortunate own goal, making it 4-0.
With the contest effectively settled, Spain eased their tempo after the 70th minute, maintaining control of possession while inviting Saudi Arabia forward before looking to strike on the counter.
Saudi Arabia managed a handful of late efforts but never seriously threatened Spain’s goal as La Roja comfortably saw out the victory.
The convincing triumph moves Spain onto four points, placing them at the summit of Group H and strengthening their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
Their group campaign concludes on 26 June in Guadalajara, where they will face Uruguay in what could decide the final standings at the top of the group.
