Timor-Leste secured their place in the Group Stage of the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 after defeating Brunei Darussalam 3-1 in the second leg of their qualification playoff at KLFA Stadium, Cheras.
The victory sends Timor-Leste into the tournament proper, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary edition in July and August, while underlining the growing progress of the national team under head coach Ze Pedro.
Having established a commanding 3-0 advantage in the first leg, Timor-Leste entered the return fixture in a strong position but still had work to do against a Brunei side determined to mount a comeback.
The opening stages saw Timor-Leste create several promising opportunities through Luís Figo and Zion Cruz, but it was Brunei who found the breakthrough just before halftime.
In the 43rd minute, Azwan Ali Rahman produced a moment of quality to ignite hopes of a comeback for the Wasps.
After receiving a clever layoff from Nur Asyraffahmi, Azwan unleashed a powerful right-footed strike from approximately 20 yards that flew past goalkeeper Dylan Niksi and into the net.
The goal reduced the aggregate deficit and ensured Brunei headed into the interval with renewed belief.
Brunei goalkeeper Haimie Nyaring continued to impress early in the second half, producing an excellent save to deny João Rangel from distance.
However, Timor-Leste eventually found the response they needed.
In the 56th minute, Claudio Osorio initiated a flowing attacking move before releasing Liam Farrugia on the flank. The winger delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where Zion Cruz rose highest to guide a powerful header beyond Nyaring.
The goal restored Timor-Leste’s three-goal aggregate cushion and effectively extinguished Brunei’s hopes of mounting a dramatic turnaround.
Timor-Leste continued to push forward in search of additional goals, with Osorio playing a key role in midfield.
The playmaker came close to adding his name to the scoresheet but was denied by another outstanding save from Nyaring, who reacted sharply to push away a powerful effort from outside the box.
The pressure eventually paid off in the closing stages.
With 10 minutes remaining, substitute Oatnasio da Silva put the result beyond doubt when he latched onto a dangerous cross from Zenivio Gostavo before finishing confidently on the run.
The goal capped a professional performance and secured a comfortable aggregate victory for Timor-Leste. 6-1 on aggregate success highlights the steady development of Timor-Leste football in recent years.
Qualification means Timor-Leste will now take their place in Group A of the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026, where significantly tougher tests await.
Their campaign begins on July 24 against defending champions Vietnam, before further group-stage clashes against four-time champions Singapore, regional powerhouse Indonesia, and Cambodia.
