France became the latest nation to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after defeating Iraq 3-0 in a weather-disrupted Group I clash at Lincoln Financial Field.
France took control early in the contest and broke the deadlock in the 14th minute.
Captain Kylian Mbappé unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from outside the penalty area that left the Iraqi goalkeeper with no chance, giving Les Bleus an early advantage.
The reigning European giants controlled possession throughout the opening period, limiting Iraq’s attacking opportunities before the match was dramatically interrupted by severe weather.
As players returned from the dressing rooms for the second half, dangerous thunderstorms moving across Philadelphia forced officials to suspend the match.
Following U.S. federal safety regulations, stadium officials ordered all supporters to leave the open seating areas and seek shelter inside the stadium after lightning was detected within the mandatory safety radius.
A warning displayed on the stadium’s giant screen instructed spectators to evacuate immediately due to an approaching severe thunderstorm.
Both squads remained inside their dressing rooms for more than two hours before the weather cleared sufficiently for play to resume.
The incident marked another reminder of the strict weather protocols governing sporting events in the United States during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Once play resumed, France quickly regained momentum. Mbappé doubled the lead in the 55th minute, capitalising on a costly mistake between the Iraqi goalkeeper and defence before calmly finishing into an empty net.
Just eleven minutes later, Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé added France’s third goal, putting the result beyond doubt and completing another dominant performance from the 2022 World Cup finalists.
France comfortably managed the closing stages to preserve a clean sheet and secure maximum points.
The lengthy delay in Philadelphia follows growing concerns over weather disruptions during the tournament.
Under U.S. safety regulations adopted by FIFA, matches must be immediately suspended whenever lightning is detected within an eight-mile (13-kilometre) radius of a stadium.
Play can only resume after 30 consecutive minutes without another lightning strike. Every additional strike resets the countdown, meaning delays can extend for several hours during prolonged thunderstorms.
FIFA has no maximum delay limit, with each situation assessed individually based on local safety recommendations.
With several matches scheduled across storm-prone regions of the United States, further weather-related interruptions remain a possibility throughout the tournament.
Mbappé’s brace also moved him closer to football history. The French superstar now has 16 FIFA World Cup goals, narrowing the gap on Lionel Messi, who earlier became the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 18 World Cup goals after his own brace against Austria.
France now joins Germany, Mexico, and the United States among the teams to have officially qualified for the Round of 32.
As France marches into the knockout rounds, Mbappé’s pursuit of the World Cup scoring record has become one of the tournament’s biggest storylines alongside Les Bleus’ quest for a third world title.
