Malaysia’s hopes of reaching the ASEAN U19 Championship 2026 semi-finals came to a heartbreaking end after a spirited performance against Thailand ended in a narrow 3-2 defeat in their final Group B match.
In a winner-takes-all showdown at the North Sumatra Main Stadium, both teams entered the contest knowing that a victory would secure top spot in the group and automatic qualification to the semi-finals. Even a draw would have significantly strengthened both sides’ chances of progressing as one of the tournament’s best-performing teams.
Instead, it was Thailand who emerged victorious after a dramatic encounter, booking their place in the last four as Group B champions and joining hosts Indonesia in the semi-finals.
Malaysia head coach Nafuzi Zain placed his faith in attacking duo Abid Safaraz Rozaidi and Arsyad Shamsul Aswadi to lead the charge against one of Southeast Asia’s traditional powerhouses.
The Young Harimau responded positively and stunned Thailand with an early breakthrough.
After an energetic opening spell from both sides, Malaysia struck first in the 13th minute when Amar Imran Uzaini Ashadi found the back of the net, sending the Malaysian bench into celebration and putting Thailand under immediate pressure.
However, the lead lasted only eight minutes. Thailand captain Pichaiya Kongsri produced the equaliser in the 21st minute before the momentum swung further in favour of the War Elephants. Just before halftime, Pirada Larsawat curled home a superb effort in the 42nd minute to give Thailand a 2-1 advantage.
Malaysia refused to back down. With the first half entering stoppage time, Arsyad Shamsul Aswadi delivered a crucial equaliser to make it 2-2, ensuring the contest remained finely balanced heading into the break.
The second half saw both teams continue to push for the goal that could decide qualification.
Nafuzi and his Thai counterpart introduced fresh legs in search of greater attacking creativity as the intensity of the match increased.
With both sides creating opportunities, the decisive moment eventually arrived ten minutes from full time.
Thailand were awarded a penalty after Ilhaam Azani Mohd Azamin was adjudged to have brought down a Thai attacker inside the penalty area.
Up stepped captain Pichaiya once again. The Thai skipper calmly converted from the spot in the 80th minute to restore his side’s lead and complete his brace.
Malaysia launched a determined late assault in search of another equaliser, but Thailand’s defence stood firm during the closing stages.
Despite their relentless efforts, the Young Harimau were unable to find a way through as the match ended 3-2 in favour of Thailand.
The defeat means Malaysia’s ASEAN U19 Championship journey comes to an end at the group stage, a disappointing outcome considering the team’s encouraging performances throughout the tournament.
Nafuzi’s young squad displayed resilience, attacking ambition, and character against one of the region’s strongest youth teams, but ultimately fell short in a match decided by fine margins.
For Thailand, the victory secures top spot in Group B and a place in the semi-finals, where they will continue their pursuit of regional glory.
