Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has officially announced the departure of Patrick Kluivert as head coach of the Indonesia national team, following the country’s elimination in the AFC Round 4 qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Dutch tactician, who took charge in January 2025, replaced Shin Tae-yong after the South Korean coach stepped down in late 2024 following Indonesia’s group-stage exit at the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup.
During his tenure, Kluivert guided Indonesia through a competitive third-round campaign, earning home victories against Bahrain and China — results that secured their progression to the fourth round for the first time in history. However, back-to-back defeats to Saudi Arabia and Iraq ended their hopes of advancing to the final stage of World Cup qualification.
Just five days after Indonesia’s Round 4 campaign concluded, PSSI issued an official statement confirming a mutual agreement to terminate the contract early:
The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) and the Indonesian National Team Coaching Team have officially agreed to terminate their cooperation early through a mutual termination mechanism.” the statement read.
“This agreement was signed between PSSI and the Parties in the Coaching Team who were previously bound by a two-year cooperation contract.”
“The termination of this collaboration was made by mutual agreement, taking into account internal dynamics and the strategic direction of the national team’s future development. With the termination of this collaboration, the coaching team will no longer manage the Indonesian national team at the senior, U23, or U20 levels.”
“The PSSI expressed its appreciation for the contributions of all members of the coaching team during their tenure. This step was taken as part of a comprehensive evaluation of the national football coaching and development program.”
Kluivert’s short spell saw flashes of promise, with Indonesia’s performances earning respect across Asia for their disciplined organization and dynamic counterattacking style. However, inconsistencies and defensive lapses proved costly at the highest level.
