Thailand moved within touching distance of the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 semi-finals after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Philippines at New Clark City Athletics Stadium on Tuesday night, maintaining their perfect start in Group B with nine points from three matches.
After dominating possession for long periods but struggling to find a breakthrough, Waris Chuthong emerged as the hero, powering home the decisive header six minutes from time to hand Anthony Hudson’s side another vital three points.
The result leaves Thailand firmly in control of Group B and only a step away from confirming their place in the knockout stage, while the Philippines remain on three points with qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Hudson opted to rotate his squad despite Thailand’s flawless opening to the campaign, handing starting roles to Jehanafie Mama, Worachit Kanitsribumphen, and Chawalwit Saela in attack.
Thailand nearly made the perfect start after only two minutes when Seksan Ratree whipped in a dangerous cross from the right that rattled the crossbar, giving the Philippines an early scare.
The hosts responded in the ninth minute through a clever set-piece routine, but Cole Mrowka’s close-range effort was safely gathered by experienced goalkeeper Kamphon Pathom-attakul.
Thailand continued to dictate proceedings, with Jehanafie Mama dragging a left-footed strike narrowly wide in the 23rd minute before Patrick Deyto denied Pokklaw Anan from a loose ball late in the first half to keep the score level at the interval.
Recognising the need for greater attacking urgency, Hudson introduced Teerasak Poeiphimai and Picha Autra immediately after the restart, followed by Kakana Khamyok, who almost made an instant impact with a shot that flashed into the side netting.
Thailand’s pressure intensified as the second half progressed. Tossawat Limwanasthian tried his luck from distance before Yotsakorn Burapha came agonisingly close, heading Worachit’s free-kick onto the crossbar.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 84th minute. Picha Autra surged down the left flank and delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area, where Waris Chuthong rose highest to power a header beyond Deyto and spark celebrations among the travelling Thai supporters.
Thailand continued to search for a second goal, but Deyto produced two more outstanding saves, denying headers from Natthapong Sairiya and a fierce long-range effort from Kakana Khamyok.
Although the margin remained narrow, Thailand comfortably saw out the closing stages to secure another valuable victory.
With nine points from three matches, the War Elephants have one foot firmly in the semi-finals ahead of their final Group B fixture against Myanmar at Rajamangala National Stadium on August 8, where a positive result would confirm top spot in the group.
For Hudson, the performance also highlighted the growing depth within his squad, as several rotational players stepped up when called upon, with Picha’s decisive assist and Waris’ match-winning header underlining Thailand’s strength beyond their regular starters.
