Philippines head coach Carles Cuadrat has revealed that his side is preparing a new tactical approach to neutralise Malaysia’s dangerous attacking threat ahead of their decisive ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 Group B clash on Saturday night.
The former Bengaluru FC manager admitted that extensive analysis has been carried out on the Harimau Malaya squad as the Philippines seek a crucial victory to keep their hopes alive in the regional championship.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Cuadrat confirmed that adjustments are expected after reviewing Malaysia’s strengths, particularly in the final third.
“We have made some tactical changes and adjustments to our playing system,” said Cuadrat.
“We have analysed Malaysia thoroughly. They are a very dangerous team, especially in attack because they possess many quality players.”
“Of course, we have our own game plan.”
The Spaniard stopped short of revealing the exact strategy but hinted that the Philippines could deploy a different tactical setup compared to previous matches.
In their previous Group B outing against Thailand on August 4, Cuadrat opted for a compact 4-4-2 formation, a system that proved highly effective for long periods.
The Philippines frustrated the tournament favourites throughout the contest, successfully keeping Thailand at bay until the 85th minute before eventually suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat.
That disciplined defensive performance has provided confidence heading into another difficult away assignment against Malaysia.
Malaysia will enter the match looking to capitalise on home advantage at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras, while the Philippines know only a positive result will strengthen their chances of progressing from Group B.
With Harimau Malaya boasting one of the tournament’s most potent attacking units, Cuadrat’s tactical blueprint will be put under immediate scrutiny against a side eager to secure another important victory in front of their supporters.
The Group B showdown between Malaysia and the Philippines is scheduled to kick off on August 8 at 9:00 PM at KLFA Stadium, Cheras.
