A “safety-first” move turned into a nightmare for Marc Marquez. After a weekend that promised a podium fight, the eight-time World Champion leaves the 2026 Thai GP with a painful double-zero after a bizarre rear tire failure forced him out of the race while chasing the leaders.
Speaking at a somber media scrum, the #93 Ducati Lenovo rider described the moment his race—and his rear Michelin—literally fell apart.
While fighting to close the gap to the front-runners, Marquez ran slightly wide at Turn 4. What should have been a routine “jump out” onto the curb to reset his line turned into a catastrophic equipment failure.
“Today I was super calm. I was riding in a very safe way,” Marquez explained. “I went wide in Turn 4, and just to be safe, I jumped out onto the curb. But when I did, I felt the rear side explode. It felt like I hit a big stone.”
Marquez noted that while riders jump curbs “hundreds of times” during testing and practice, this specific impact destroyed the rim and caused the tire to fail instantly. “That safety way today was not the best decision. I was very unlucky to destroy the rim.”
On-board footage showed Marquez’s Ducati shaking violently before he was forced to park it. The Spaniard admitted the sensation brought back bad memories.
“The bike was shaking so much… it was strange. Occupied? Yes, because it reminded me of the vibration issues in India.”
“I saw I was forcing the bike too much. I said, ‘Okay, I don’t want to take any risk.’ I lost the bike.”
With Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) and Pedro Acosta (KTM) dominating the pace in Buriram, Marquez was honest about the current pecking order. While he felt a podium was possible before the failure, he admitted the competition has bridged the gap to Ducati.
“Aprilia and Acosta’s KTM were a bit stronger than Ducati here. Bezzecchi was flying all weekend, and Acosta was riding in a very good way. Last year we won many races, but looks like the others are getting closer and closer.”
