In the high-stakes theater of MotoGP, the line between hero and zero is razor-thin. After a heartbreaking crash in Saturday’s Sprint, Marco Bezzecchi crossed that line with a vengeance on Sunday, delivering a flawless victory at the 2026 PT Grand Prix of Thailand to claim the first championship lead of the season.
The “Bez” didn’t just win; he dictated the terms. Launching from pole, the Aprilia star carved out a gap that peaked at over five seconds, turning the season opener into a solo masterclass.
Speaking in a candid post-race press conference, Bezzecchi was open about the mental hurdles he faced after his high-profile error in the Sprint.
“Clearly, today was about overcoming yesterday,” Bezzecchi admitted. “I made a few too many mistakes. The crash in qualifying was pushing like a beast for the time, which is allowed, but the Sprint error was small with a huge consequence. It was important to stay calm and redeem myself.”
When reminded of his own comment that the gap between a “phenomenon” and an “idiot” (coglione) is tiny, Bezzecchi stayed humble despite his “phenomenal” Sunday: “I don’t feel like giving myself that title. I just tried to give my best without making mistakes.”
With all Aprilia bikes showing staggering pace in Buriram, the paddock is buzzing with rumors that the Noale factory has finally overtaken the Bologna giants. However, Bezzecchi is playing it cool.
“It’s too early for comparisons. We’ve had two tests and one race. We need to stay quiet, calm, and focused.”
“In MotoGP, it takes nothing to fall back into the abyss. You saw it yesterday—I was fast, but one tiny mistake and everything was thrown away.”
Despite the massive win in the Thai heat, don’t expect Bezzecchi to be spotted on a “Hangover”-style night in Buriram. “Today’s MotoGP doesn’t allow for a ‘night of lions.’ We will celebrate, but with calm,” he laughed.
With a perfect result in the bag and his Aprilia RS-GP looking like the bike to beat, Bezzecchi heads to the next round with the target firmly on his back.
