Malaysia’s quest for a spot got off to a flyer as the Speedy Tigers dismantled Austria 6-1 in the Men’s FIH World Cup 2026 Qualifiers Group B opener at Suez Canal Authority Hockey Stadium, Ismailia.
Despite an early scare, Sarjit Singh’s men showed why they are the favorites in the group, turning a slow start into a dominant goal-fest to claim all three points.
Determined to secure a direct path to the World Cup, Sarjit Singh fielded a high-octane lineup featuring veteran marksman Faizal Saari and the clinical Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal. However, the script nearly went sideways in the 3rd minute.
Austria’s Fulop Losonci silenced the Malaysian bench early on, firing home a precise penalty stroke that left goalkeeper Hafizuddin Othman with no chance.
The Tigers didn’t panic. After finding their rhythm in the second quarter, the floodgates opened:
In the 23rd Minute Azrai Aizad leveled the scores with a brilliant field goal.
Just sixty seconds later, Shello Silverius ghosted past the Austrian defense to beat keeper Christoph Sandbichler, putting Malaysia 2-1 up heading into the break.
The second half was a masterclass in relentless attacking hockey. Malaysia, ranked significantly higher than world No. 21 Austria, squeezed the life out of the contest:
Norsyafiq Sumantri converted a penalty corner in the 34th minute to make it 3-1.
Azrai Aizad bagged his brace in the 44th minute, proving to be a constant “thorn in the side” for the Austrian backline.
Akhimullah Anuar Esook added a fifth in the 51st minute before skipper Marhan Abd Jalil put the icing on the cake with a clinical finish in the 57th.
With this 6-1 victory, Malaysia sits comfortably at the top of Group B. While the standings may shift depending on the result between Pakistan and China, the Tigers have sent a clear message to their rivals.
Up Next: The Speedy Tigers face a massive litmus test against rivals Pakistan on March 2nd. A win there would virtually seal their progression.
