Malaysia’s challenge at the Perodua Malaysia Masters 2026 experienced a rollercoaster day on Wednesday as several national shuttlers marched into the next round while others suffered painful exits at the Unifi Arena.
The biggest positives for the home crowd came from mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and husband-and-wife duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who both advanced comfortably into the Round of 16 of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament.
Second seeds Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei were ruthless in their opening-round encounter, brushing aside Canada’s Jonathan Lai-Crystal Lai 21-6, 21-14 in dominant fashion. The Malaysians displayed superior pace and attacking precision throughout the match, underlining their status as one of the tournament favourites.
Sixth seeds Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai also produced a commanding performance after defeating American pair Chen Zhi Yi-Francesca Corbett 21-8, 21-16. Their experience and tactical composure proved too strong as they secured progression without major difficulty.
In women’s singles, national player Goh Jin Wei delivered one of Malaysia’s standout victories of the day by stunning Thailand’s fourth seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan in a gripping three-game battle. After dominating the opening game 21-6, Goh was forced into a decider before eventually sealing a memorable 21-6, 16-21, 21-10 triumph.
Another encouraging result came from women’s singles shuttler Letshanaa Karupathevan, who battled hard to overcome Denmark’s Amalie Schulz 21-13, 19-21, 21-15 to continue her impressive run in Kuala Lumpur.
However, the day also brought several disappointments for the Malaysian contingent.
Men’s singles hopes suffered setbacks after Leong Jun Hao went down 19-21, 21-23 against China’s Hu Zhe An despite a spirited fightback in the second game. Justin Hoh also exited the tournament following a straight-games defeat to Indonesia star Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, losing 16-21, 14-21.
In mixed doubles, Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing squandered a first-game advantage before losing 21-13, 12-21, 16-21 to China’s seventh seeds Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi.
Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin were also unable to overcome Denmark’s strong fourth-seeded pair Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Bøje, falling 13-21, 15-21.
Malaysia’s women’s doubles campaign endured a difficult day as Low Zi Yu-Aqilah Maisarah lost 18-21, 12-21 to China’s Bao Li Jing-Cao Zi Han, while Lam Cho Wai-Sim Jia Min were completely outclassed by Americans Francesca Corbett-Jennie Gai 8-21, 3-21.
National pair Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Hui also crashed out after a straight-games defeat against Japanese fifth seeds Arisa Igarashi-Chiharu Shida.
In men’s doubles, Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong were unable to match Japan’s eighth seeds Kakeru Kumagai-Hiroki Nishi, losing 9-21, 13-21.
Meanwhile, Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien bowed out in mixed doubles after falling 14-21, 19-21 to Hong Kong’s Chan Yin Chak-Ng Tsz Yau, while women’s singles player Wong Ling Ching suffered heartbreak in a dramatic three-game loss to Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh. After taking the opening game, Wong narrowly lost the decider 23-25 in a tense finish.
Despite the mixed outcomes, Malaysia still maintains strong representation heading into the later rounds, with several top pairs and singles players keeping the nation’s hopes alive for silverware on home soil.
