A groundbreaking new era in sports broadcasting is set to unfold this Saturday as Apple and Major League Soccer prepare to deliver the first-ever major professional sporting event broadcast entirely using iPhone technology.
The historic production will feature the clash between LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC live from Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday, 23 May, streamed globally via Apple TV.
In a revolutionary move for live sports production, the entire match broadcast will be captured using the new iPhone 17 Pro, marking the first time a major professional sports event will rely fully on iPhone devices throughout the entire production process.
The showcase arrives during the final MLS weekend before the league pauses for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America, adding even more significance to the occasion.
Apple confirmed that iPhone 17 Pro units will be strategically placed throughout the stadium to capture every aspect of the matchday experience — from pre-match warmups and player introductions to immersive goal-net camera angles and dynamic crowd reactions inside the arena.
The compact design of the device allows production crews to position cameras in areas previously difficult to access using traditional broadcast equipment, delivering fresh cinematic perspectives and closer fan immersion without compromising professional broadcast quality.
This latest innovation continues Apple’s growing push into sports broadcasting technology after the company first introduced iPhone integration during “Friday Night Baseball” broadcasts in September 2025.
That earlier experiment — featuring a Major League Baseball matchup between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers — received widespread acclaim for its cinematic visuals and unique in-game footage.
The production was so influential that the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum added the actual broadcast-used iPhone into its permanent collection.
According to Apple, the iPhone 17 Pro’s triple 48MP Fusion camera system — effectively offering the versatility of eight lenses in one compact device — plays a key role in making the ambitious production possible.
The broadcast will also utilise professional-grade features such as Apple Log 2 video recording technology to ensure cinematic image quality throughout the live transmission.
Following overwhelmingly positive feedback from fans and industry professionals, Apple has steadily expanded iPhone usage into more sports productions, including the 2025 MLS Cup, before fully integrating the technology into regular “Friday Night Baseball” and MLS coverage throughout the 2026 season.
