The 2026 Formula 1 season has exploded into life at Albert Park, and if Qualifying is anything to go by, we are in for a year of pure chaos.
George Russell turned the Australian Grand Prix into his personal playground, securing a dominant pole position—but the real story was the carnage behind him.
From a World Champion in the barriers to a rookie sensation on the front row, the script for the season opener has been shredded.
George Russell was in a league of his own. Clocking a blistering 1:18.518, he wasn’t just fast; he was untouchable. But the biggest smile in the Mercedes garage belongs to Kimi Antonelli. Despite his car being in pieces after an FP3 crash, the Italian teenager repaid his mechanics’ sweat with a P2 start on his full-season debut.
The shock of the day came in Q1. Max Verstappen, the man who usually defines precision, suffered a nightmare rear-axle lock at Turn 1. His Red Bull went careening through the gravel and into the barriers, ending his session before it even started. And the Dutchman will start from the back of the grid.
“The car just locked… Fantastic,” a sarcastic Verstappen radioed in.
With Max out, all eyes turned to Isack Hadjar. On his Red Bull debut, the Frenchman didn’t just survive; he thrived. Hadjar snatched P3, out-qualifying Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and home favorite Oscar Piastri. It’s a massive statement for the Red Bull junior program.
It was a rough day for the heavy hitters. Reigning champ Lando Norris could only manage P6, while Lewis Hamilton starts P7. Further down, the new Cadillac team had a baptism of fire, with both Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas knocked out in Q1.
