Singapore kicked off their ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 campaign in unforgettable fashion as Ilhan Fandi struck a sensational stoppage-time winner to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory over Cambodia in their Group A opener at the Morodok Techo National Stadium, Phnom Penh.
The Lions looked set to be frustrated after surrendering an early lead, but Ilhan produced a moment of brilliance 11 minutes into stoppage time, volleying home with virtually the final kick of the match to hand head coach Gavin Lee a priceless three points.
Singapore started brightly and nearly opened the scoring inside the opening minutes, with Shawal Anuar missing one chance before seeing another effort ruled out for offside.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 22nd minute through the experienced forward.
A superb long pass from defender Lionel Tan split Cambodia’s defence, allowing Shawal to race clear before calmly driving a right-footed finish beyond goalkeeper Hul Kimhuy, with the ball clipping the inside of the post on its way into the net.
Despite taking the lead, Singapore struggled to maintain control as Cambodia gradually settled into the contest.
The hosts deservedly drew level ten minutes into the second half after capitalising on a costly mistake.
Substitute Song Ui-young was dispossessed deep inside Singapore’s own half, allowing Phat Sokha to release Ouk Sovann, who powered an unstoppable finish past Izwan Mahbud to make it 1-1.
Cambodia then dominated large portions of the second half and came agonisingly close to taking the lead.
Sa Ty was denied by a crucial save from Izwan Mahbud after being played through by Samuel Bong, while Mon Rado repeatedly caused problems down the flank, creating another golden opportunity that Yem Devit could only steer wide.
Singapore thought they had snatched victory in the closing stages when Ilhan bundled the ball into the net from close range, only for the goal to be ruled out following a lengthy VAR review.
But the visitors refused to give up. Deep into added time, Song Ui-young delivered another dangerous ball into the penalty area. Ilhan brilliantly flicked the ball into the air before unleashing a stunning volley that flew beyond Hul Kimhuy and into the roof of the net, sparking wild celebrations among the Singapore players and travelling supporters.
The spectacular strike ensured Singapore escaped Phnom Penh with maximum points despite spending much of the second half under relentless Cambodian pressure.
Although the performance left plenty for Gavin Lee to reflect on, the result gives Singapore an ideal start in what promises to be a fiercely competitive Group A.
For Cambodia and head coach Koji Gyotoku, the defeat will be particularly painful after producing one of their strongest performances against Singapore in recent years, only to be denied by Ilhan’s moment of individual brilliance.
Singapore will now look to build on the dramatic victory when they host Timor-Leste in their second group match, while Cambodia must quickly regroup to keep their qualification hopes alive after suffering one of the most heartbreaking defeats of the tournament so far.
