Malaysia’s hopes of securing their first victory at the 2026 AFF Women’s Cup suffered another setback after were beaten 3-1 by Singapore at KLFA Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
After opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Laos, Joel Cornelli’s side entered the Group stage clash determined to claim three crucial points on home soil. However, Singapore proved too clinical in front of goal to leave Cheras with a convincing victory and a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.
The match began evenly, although the visitors quickly established control of possession and created the more dangerous attacking opportunities.
Malaysia’s best early chance fell to Hadfina Firdaus, who scored the equaliser against Laos in the opening match, but the forward was unable to direct her effort on target.
Singapore capitalised on their strong start in the 12th minute when Yuvika Suresh broke the deadlock, beating Malaysian goalkeeper Asma Junaidi to give the Lionesses an early advantage.
Just before the half-time whistle, Singapore doubled their lead through star striker Danelle Tan, putting the visitors firmly in command heading into the break.
Malaysia emerged with greater urgency after the restart and were rewarded in the 59th minute.
Henrietta Justine found the back of the net to reduce the deficit and briefly reignite hopes of a comeback for the home supporters.
However, any momentum Malaysia had built was quickly extinguished.
Danelle Tan struck again in the 75th minute to restore Singapore’s two-goal cushion and effectively seal the result.
The victory confirmed Singapore’s qualification for the 2026 AFF Women’s Cup semi-finals, while Malaysia remain searching for their first win of the tournament.
With only one point collected from their opening two matches, Malaysia now face a difficult task to keep their hopes alive in the competition.
Joel Cornelli’s side must regroup quickly and deliver a strong response in their remaining group fixtures if they are to remain in contention for a place in the knockout stage.
For Singapore, the result highlights their growing strength in regional women’s football as the Lionesses march confidently into the semi-finals.
