Malaysia head coach Tan Cheng Hoe believes the Harimau Malaya squad is mentally prepared and eager to begin their ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 campaign, with the team’s immediate focus firmly fixed on securing three points against hosts Myanmar in Saturday’s Group B opener.
Speaking during the official pre-match press conference alongside captain Paulo Josué, Tan revealed the squad arrived in Myanmar in high spirits after completing what he described as a productive training camp.
“We only arrived yesterday, but the players are in a very good mood. We’ve had several good days of training, and our preparation has gone very well. I’m sure the players are looking forward to tomorrow’s match against Myanmar,” said Tan.
While Malaysia enter the tournament with confidence, Tan stressed that his side will not underestimate Myanmar, who have begun a new era under a new head coach.
The Malaysian tactician expects an intense contest against a team known for its aggressive pressing and relentless work ethic.
“We have to respect Myanmar. They have a new coach, a hardworking team, and they have prepared well for this tournament.”
“From what we’ve analysed, Myanmar play with high intensity, strong fighting spirit and they press aggressively. We know what to expect.”
Despite acknowledging the challenge, Tan believes Malaysia possess the quality and composure needed to handle Myanmar’s style of play.
“I believe our players are capable of absorbing the pressure and coping with the way Myanmar play. We know the atmosphere will be fantastic, with a full stadium behind the home team, but we are ready for that challenge.”
Tan also highlighted the positive environment within the Malaysian camp, praising his players’ commitment and willingness to embrace his tactical ideas.
According to the Malaysian boss, the team’s mentality has been one of the biggest positives heading into the tournament.
“The mood is very positive. The players are enjoying themselves, they’re listening to the coaching staff, and everything is coming together well.”
“The players understand what is being asked of them, and hopefully tomorrow they can show that on the pitch.”
Captain Paulo Josué echoed his coach’s optimism, insisting the entire squad understands the importance of making a winning start.
The experienced midfielder believes Malaysia’s preparations have placed the team in a strong position to compete from the opening whistle.
“Everyone understands what the coach wants from us. Now it’s about showing it on the field.”
“We’ll give everything we have to collect the first three points and take them back to Malaysia.”
Malaysia face Myanmar in one of the standout fixtures of the opening round, with both teams beginning new chapters under fresh leadership.
A positive result would provide crucial momentum in what is expected to be a fiercely competitive Group B, where every point could prove decisive in the race for a place in the knockout stage.
