Rising Malaysian shuttler Eogene Ewe delivered the biggest upset of the day at the Macau Open 2026, defeating second seed Jason Teh of Singapore to book his maiden BWF World Tour Super 300 semi-final and breathe fresh life into Malaysia’s men’s singles campaign.
The 21-year-old, ranked World No. 80, produced a composed and fearless performance to overcome the higher-ranked Singaporean 21-9, 21-19 in just 39 minutes, marking one of the biggest victories of his career.
Entering the quarter-finals, Eogene had lost both of his previous meetings against World No. 31 Jason Teh, but the Perak-born youngster turned the tables emphatically.
He dominated the opening game with aggressive attacking play before holding his nerve in a much tighter second set to complete a straight-games victory.
The triumph not only avenged his previous defeats but also improved their head-to-head record to 1-2, while securing Eogene’s first-ever appearance in the semi-finals of a Super 300 tournament.
Eogene will now face China’s Hu Zhe An for a place in the final.
The Malaysian faces another stern challenge, having lost both of his previous meetings against the World No. 48.
However, after eliminating the tournament’s second seed in commanding fashion, Eogene will head into Saturday’s semi-final with growing confidence and momentum.
Eogene’s success headlines an impressive Malaysian showing in Macau, with four doubles pairs also progressing to the last four.
Malaysian Women’s Doubles Second seeds Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting comfortably defeated South Korea’s Kim Hye Jeong and Moon In Seo 21-14, 21-16 in 47 minutes.
The World No. 23 pair reached their first semi-final of the 2026 season and will next meet China’s Bao Li Jing and Cao Zi Han, with both pairs facing each other for the first time on the international stage.
Malaysian Men’s Doubles World No. 73 duo Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong produced another major upset by defeating top-seeded fellow Malaysians Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub Azriyn and Tan Wee Kiong 14-21, 21-11, 24-22 after a thrilling 57-minute battle.
The victory represents the pair’s best-ever result at Super 300 level, earning them a semi-final showdown against Indonesia’s Ali Faathir Rayhan and Devin Artha Wahyudi.
Malaysia will also have a second men’s doubles representative after Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi defeated Taiwan’s Wei Chun Wei and Yang Po Chih 22-20, 18-21, 21-13.
They will now face South Korea’s Jin Yong and Lee Jong Min for a place in the final.
In mixed doubles, Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing became Malaysia’s sole remaining pair after dispatching South Korea’s Cho Song Hyun and Jeong Na Eun 21-11, 21-13 in just 30 minutes.
Their reward is a blockbuster semi-final clash against China’s formidable World No. 2 pairing Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin.
While Malaysia’s men’s singles department has endured a difficult period in recent months, Eogene Ewe’s breakthrough run in Macau offers renewed optimism for the future.
His fearless display against one of the tournament favourites highlights the emergence of another promising talent capable of competing with the world’s elite.
With five Malaysian representatives still in contention across four events, the national team will head into semi-final day aiming to convert impressive performances into multiple places in Sunday’s finals.
