Heading into the final Group A clash at the iconic Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Malaysia needed a crucial victory over Indonesia to secure a spot in the semi-finals. However, the team’s hopes were dashed as they failed to break the deadlock despite a determined effort.
In front of thousands of passionate Indonesian fans, the Garuda Muda controlled large spells of the match, while Malaysia opted for a more defensive strategy, relying on swift counter-attacks to trouble their opponents.
The intensity ramped up in the second half as both sides traded attacking blows in a bid to find the winner, but neither was able to convert their chances, and the match ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.
The result was enough to send Indonesia into the semi-finals as Group A winners with 7 points from three matches. Meanwhile, Malaysia had to settle for third place in the group, finishing with 4 points from one win, one draw, and one defeat.
The Philippines claimed second place in Group A with 6 points, but their hopes of progressing to the semi-finals as one of the best runners-up hinge on the remaining matches in Groups B and C scheduled for Tuesday.
Brunei, meanwhile, endured a tough campaign, finishing bottom of Group A with three straight defeats, conceding 17 goals and scoring only once.
Malaysia’s early exit will serve as a learning experience for Nafuzi Zain’s young squad, who will now look to regroup and build towards future regional competitions.
