Malaysia’s preparations for the Uber Cup 2026 have been dealt a significant blow after women’s doubles star Pearly Tan confirmed her withdrawal from the national squad due to a recurring back injury.
The 25-year-old Malaysian shuttler announced the difficult decision in an emotional statement, revealing that the injury resurfaced during her most recent tournament and forced her to step away from competition to prioritise recovery.
In her message, Tan expressed deep regret at being unable to represent Malaysia in one of badminton’s most prestigious team events.
“I sincerely apologise for letting everyone down. I recently suffered a back injury during my last tournament, and it breaks my heart to say that I won’t be able to join the Uber Cup this time,” she said.
The Malaysian doubles specialist admitted that competing alongside her teammates had been her biggest motivation, making the withdrawal even more painful.
“There’s nothing I wanted more than to be on court, fighting for every point and standing with my team. But because of my back injury, I’ve had to step back for now.”
Tan revealed that the setback is linked to the same back injury that nearly derailed her career three years ago, making the decision even more emotionally challenging.
“That same injury almost took everything away from me before. Those memories are still with me and something I cannot ignore,” she explained.
The recent days leading to the decision were particularly difficult for the Malaysian star.
“I couldn’t sleep and my mind kept searching for another option, hoping there was a way I could still play.”
Known for her relentless fighting spirit on court, Tan emphasised that walking away from competition was never her first instinct.
“Anyone who knows me understands that I would never walk away from the court. I would fight until the very last point every single time,” she said.
“But this time my body is telling me to stop, and I have to listen.”
She also acknowledged the concern of her family and medical team, stressing that recovery must now become the priority.
Despite missing the tournament, Tan promised to remain firmly behind the Malaysian squad throughout the competition.
“It hurts so much not being able to stand beside my teammates and go through this journey together,” she said.
“My heart will always be with the team, and I will be cheering for every single one of them from afar.”
The women’s doubles ace also vowed to return stronger once fully recovered.
“For now, all I wish for is a healthy body so I can return to the court again.”
Tan’s absence leaves a notable gap in Malaysia’s Uber Cup campaign, where she has been a key figure alongside long-time partner Thinaah Muralitharan. Nevertheless, her determination to recover fully ensures fans may yet see the celebrated Malaysian duo back competing at the highest level in the near future.
