Morocco showed resilience, character, and attacking quality as the Atlas Lions came from behind twice to defeat Haiti 4-2 in their final FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, securing a place in the Round of 32 and extending their unbeaten run in the tournament.
The victory ensured Morocco finished on seven points, level with Brazil at the top of the group. However, the South American giants claimed first place on goal difference after their 3-0 victory over Scotland. Morocco advanced as group runners-up, marking their third qualification for the knockout stages after historic campaigns in 1986 and 2022.
Many expected Morocco to dominate proceedings and cruise to victory, but Haiti had other ideas.
Despite Morocco controlling possession and creating the early pressure, Haiti stunned the Atlas Lions with an opening goal against the run of play. A dangerous effort from Leny Joseph forced an unfortunate own goal from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, handing the Caribbean side an early advantage.
The setback only increased Morocco’s determination.
Full-back Achraf Hakimi soon restored parity, finishing a well-worked move after excellent work down the left flank by Bilal El Khannouss, who was one of Morocco’s most influential performers throughout the first half.
Just as Morocco appeared to be regaining control, Haiti delivered another shock.
Wilson Isidor unleashed a spectacular long-range strike that flew beyond Bounou, restoring Haiti’s lead and silencing Moroccan supporters inside the stadium.
However, Morocco’s attacking pressure never relented.
Their persistence paid off when Ismael Saibari found the net with a composed finish, bringing the Atlas Lions level for the second time before halftime and ensuring the match remained finely balanced heading into the break.
Morocco emerged after the interval determined to complete the comeback.
Head coach Mohammed Ouahbi’s tactical adjustments proved decisive as the Atlas Lions continued to push forward in search of a winner.
The breakthrough finally arrived through substitute Sofiane Rahimi, whose goal gave Morocco the lead for the first time in the contest and shifted momentum firmly in their favour.
With Haiti forced to chase the game, Morocco capitalised once more. Yassine Jassim added a fourth goal late in the match to seal an impressive 4-2 victory and confirm Morocco’s progression to the knockout stage.
The result marks Morocco’s third appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds and their third qualification without suffering a defeat in the group stage. While the Atlas Lions topped their group in both 1986 and 2022, they advance as runners-up this time after finishing level on points with Brazil.
Morocco’s ability to recover from adversity against Haiti once again highlighted the fighting spirit that has become synonymous with the national team in recent years.
As the tournament enters the knockout phase, the Atlas Lions will look to build on their unbeaten group-stage campaign and continue their quest for another memorable World Cup run.
