Qatar sealed their place at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating the United Arab Emirates 2–1 in a tense encounter at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Al Rayyan.
Second-half headers from Boualem Khouki (49’) and Pedro Miguel (74’), both set up by AFC Player of the Year Akram Afif, ensured Julien Lopetegui’s men advanced to the Finals. It will be Qatar’s second consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance following their debut as hosts in 2022.
Qatar entered the match knowing that only a victory would guarantee qualification — and they rose to the challenge under immense pressure.
The first half was a cagey affair, with chances at both ends. Sultan Al Brake’s close-range effort in the 8th minute was denied by UAE keeper Khaled Eisa, while Ayoub Al Ouwi’s rebound flashed dangerously across goal.
At the other end, Lucas Pimenta came inches away from putting the visitors ahead when his header narrowly missed the target, and Ali Saleh’s pinpoint cross continued to threaten the Qatari backline.
However, Qatar took control after the interval. Afif, orchestrating from the left flank, delivered a sublime free-kick in the 49th minute which Khouki expertly nodded past Eisa to break the deadlock and ignite celebrations among the home fans.
The UAE pushed for an equaliser through substitutes Erik and Sultan Adil, but their efforts went unrewarded. Three minutes after that missed opportunity, Afif again stepped up — curling in another perfect free-kick which Pedro Miguel met with a towering header at the far post to make it 2–0.
Afif’s creativity and set-piece precision once again proved decisive, with both goals highlighting the forward’s growing influence under Lopetegui’s system.
Qatar were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Tarek Salman was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Erik. The UAE capitalized almost immediately, as Sultan Adil drove home a late consolation goal in the 98th minute to make it 2–1.
Despite the late scare, Qatar held firm to secure a victory that sparked emotional celebrations on the pitch and in the stands — marking a monumental step in the nation’s footballing journey.
The result sees Qatar top Group A and confirm their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Meanwhile, UAE’s defeat means they will face the Group B runners-up in a two-legged playoff next month, with the winner advancing to the FIFA Playoff Tournament in March for one final chance to qualify.
