Malaysia national team striker Rodrigo Holgado could soon be handed a second chance in his professional career, as Chilean top-flight side Coquimbo Unido has expressed interest in re-signing the 31-year-old forward.
According to Chilean sports portal En Cancha, Coquimbo’s management is eager to bring Holgado back for a second stint with the club, where he previously enjoyed one of the most prolific periods of his career.
Holgado is no stranger to the “Pirates” of Coquimbo Unido, having played for the club during the 2023 season, where he scored 19 goals and provided four assists — a campaign that cemented his reputation as one of the league’s most effective strikers.
His potential return to Chile also represents an opportunity for Holgado to revive his form following a challenging season with América de Cali in Colombia. Despite high expectations, the Argentine-born forward struggled to replicate his past success, recording 15 goals and five assists in 77 appearances, a return that drew criticism from sections of the fanbase.
However, any move back to Coquimbo Unido remains subject to FIFA’s decision regarding Holgado’s appeal. The Malaysia international is currently one of seven players implicated in a FIFA disciplinary case involving alleged document falsification, which also involves the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
Holgado and his representatives have lodged an appeal to FIFA, and the football world now awaits the governing body’s ruling.
